Comparison of Satisfaction with Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment between Psychiatric Hospital, General Hospital, and University Hospital in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract
Objective£ºThe purpose of this study is to compare the schizophrenic inpatient satisfaction with hospital treatment between the psychiatric hospital, general hospital, and university hospital and to investigate the variables that influence the inpatient satisfaction with hospital treatment.

Methods£ºA 30-item multidimensional questionnaire tested for good validity and reliability was administered to inpatients with schizophrenia(n=323) discharged from psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, and university hospitals.

Results£ºPatients discharged from university hospital were significantly satisfied than those of general and psychiatric hospital in the total scores of service satisfaction scale. Patients with university hospital were significantly satisfied than those of general and psychiatric hospital in the subscales of staff attitude, treatment quality, ward environment, ward policy, and there were no differences in the subscale of access/cost between psychiatric hospital, general hospital, and university hospital. Three variables such as type of hospital, type of admission, monthly income were significant explanation on the satisfaction with inpatient psychiatric services. The common items with high percentage of satisfaction were included the attitude and ability of doctor or nurse in all three type of hospitals. But high percentage dissatisfied for the items were different between psychiatric facilities. Patients discharged from general and psychiatric hospital expressed high dissatisfaction with the ward rule or environment, but those discharged from university hospital expressed high dissatisfaction with treatment cost and the staff¡¯s explanation for hospitalization. Staff attitude is the most important determinant in the satisfaction of psychiatric inpatients.

Conclusion£ºPatients discharged from university hospital were significantly satisfied than those of general and psychiatric hospital in the total scores of service satisfaction scale. Type of hospital, type of admission, monthly income were significant explanation variables on the satisfaction with inpatient psychiatric services. For increasing the satisfaction level of psychiatric inpatient in Korea, it is necessary to induce patient to hospitalize voluntarily.
